Niagara Falls July 27, 2007

Posted by Anders in Exchange student, Hostfamily, Niagara Falls, USA.

What a beautiful sight. Standing in a boat, enclosed in the mist coming from the falls around you. Everyone are standing in blue raincoats, just like in the movies.

Niagara Falls was a great experience for me. It was so beautiful, so mysterious. Better start from the top.

Drove at 7 o’clock in the morning, because we had a 5 hour drive ahead of us. We drove through Ohio, Pennsylvania, and finally we came to New York state. Niagara Falls is not far from the city of Buffalo, but we needed to drive around to find a free parkingslot. At last we found a weird-looking indian, who had an empty parkinglot. It more looked like a construction site, but never the less it costed $10 to park there.

We first got to the visitor center, where we saw an IMAX movie about Niagara Falls, the discovery of it, the history, and some of the attempts of riding the falls. 15 had since 1900 tried to do it, and only 10 had survived it. One of them was an old school teacher, who wanted to be famous. She would lie in a barrel full of pillows and then ride over the falls. She was very lucky that she survived, but she was actually uninjured.
One of the other stories, was about an 11 year old boy, wearing nothing but a lifejacket and a swimsuit, accidentally falled in the water, and was carried away by the stream. Later he was found by one of the tourboats at the foot of the waterfall, beaten but alive.

After the movie, we took a boattrip on the famous Maid of The Mist. It took us up close to both the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls (Niagara consists of two different falls, where Horseshoe Falls is the biggest and most impressive).

After that, we got to walk up close to the American Falls, so we actually could take a shower in it. Of course I should try that, so I was soaked even though I had a raincoat on.

After that, we saw some rather boring museums. You could clearly see that it was the Waterfalls that was the main attraction. Nonetheless, we had a great day, and it was such an experience to see the falls.

Hej farmor.
